Reading Brand Camp makes you one of my people.
And boy, do I have a set of words for YOU: heartstrong, honest, and hard-working. (Had you scared for a second though, huh?) I picture you in jeans and a t-shirt, ready to laugh at a good “That’s what she said” joke. You’re my people.
The only people I can effectively engage with are the people who are just like me at a fundamental level.
Sure, we’re all different, but at a fundamental level you are heartstrong, honest, and hard-working. Speaking directly to you is easy for me, and you feel that. If Brand Camp posts were suddenly laced with talk of ‘just make money, honey, forget your heart’ and fashion updates and Botox injections, you’d be like, “What the fuck just happened? Where did Kristen go?” You would be able to feel that I wasn’t speaking my truth and we’d end up right back here, with me writing for you whilst wearing jeans and a t-shirt.
More truths I work from, just to get all crazy transparent on you:
I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I let my heart attract you or push you away. It’s the only way I know to make damn sure the people reading are my people.
I’m not interested in business growth merely for growth’s sake. Nor am I interested in just taking your money. I’m interested in meaningful connections and in helping you create a business life that lights you up.
Since you’re here, I’m guessing the same is true for you. You’re my people. Ergo…
Attracting meaningful connections when everyone else is posting coupon codes, discounts, and specials is totally possible.
The best way to trigger client interest is to define your people, then speak to them directly in all your business interactions.
If your website is cold as ice, with the bare minimum of details humanly possible, how can your clients connect with your soft heart and loving spirit?
How can they know that you’re a cow whisperer if you don’t tell them? …speaking of which, cows love me. Like, holy hell. LOVE.
If your marketing is all about prices, facts, and figures – why are you surprised when your clients only seem concerned with prices, facts, and figures? You’re asking them to show up with their wallet instead of their heart, so you’re whipping up credit cards instead of connections.
What if we could find your people, then get them to show up with their hearts AND wallets? Wouldn’t that be friggin’ fantastic?
That would mean the people contacting you are YOUR people. Their values closely align with your own, and their priorities are the same as yours during your working relationship.
The first step in the process of finding your people is to write a manifesto.
Yes, that’s a big word, but it means defining the beliefs that will attract your people to you. And I’ve made it as painless as humanly possible.
The first chapter of Circus Circus is concerned solely with writing a manifesto (and it’s free — no excuses!), so get started by letting me know where to send the chapter!
Even if you have already downloaded that goodness, please revisit the chapter and actually, you know, write your manifesto.
During part two, with manifesto in hand, we’ll take the next steps toward defining and finding YOUR people. This entire finding-your-friggin-fantastic-people series will help you manifest massive meaning in your business.
If this post resonates with you, pretty please share it on Facebook or Twitter to let me know.
When you’re ready, feast your eyes on part two and part three in the How to Find Your People series!

I am definitely one of your peeps…you bring a smile to my face each day. Thanks for all you do!
And thanks for showing up, my dear!
How cool is it that when you describe your “your people” I find myself saying “that’s me!” You’re a magician Kristen!
There’s magic to it, but nothing you can’t implement in your own business. Promise.
There’s a cow on the beach – love it! (and everything darn thing you write
)
Well thanks! And if incarnation is real, I want to come back as a beach cow. Best. Animal. Ever.
I love being one of your people… seriously you make my business life a lot lighter!
Lighter = an awesome compliment. Thank you.
Can I get a brand camp badge for my site that says I am Kristen’s People? That would make me feel really cool.
Off to find the manifesto I wrote when you first offered that downloady awesomeness.
Thanks for making my day awesome!
lol…I love that you’re my people, Jenika! And I’d love to see your manifesto, too.
You totally speak my language. Love it.
I’m totally gonna write the manifesto, finally. I have a week, right?
Yes, a whole week! Just schedule an hour to work on it — even that hour will bring you huge clarity. Promise.
I’ve missed you and your ass-kicking posts. I’ve needed a good ass-kicking. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
Love this post. How did you know this was just what I needed?
LOVE that I get to be one of your people and I second the notion that a blog badge would be awesome!
Really? A blog badge? That would be fun to whip up…I can ask Michelle…
I’m so glad I get to be one of your people!
Oh Holli, you have no idea how THRILLED I am to be able to be me to my accountant!!!! Thank you for being you!
You know, one small reason why I want to own my own business is because I’m sick of sacrificing self for a phony professional image. There’s no reason why we can’t have both, and there’s no reason why anyone should have to live a double-life to maintain their professional image! So if you’re saying I can find people who appreciate me for what I do AND the person I am?!?! Bring it on. I am sooooo ready.
You can absolutely ditch the double life — I *heart* the groundwork you’re laying for your business, too — just don’t let those details become walls…I wanna see your finished website!!!
Haha, I laughed out loud when I read “… please revisit the chapter and actually, you know, write your manifesto.” I love reading your posts, it’s like you’re always talking directly to me … current, relavent, to the point. Love it, thanks for the never ending inspiration and motivation, even if some of us take a little longer to get there.
But get there you will…can’t wait to read your manifesto!
thanks for this post. Its exactly what I needed to hear.
Happy to have helped, Amy!
I was so excited by this that I wrote a manifesto for my photography biz, one fo my other biz, and then started on one for my family, and one just for me. How powerful these few sentences can be!
Thanks for sharing and making it super fun too
Yay!!!
Just wanted to say thanks for this- I read the 1st chapter & started on my manifesto a few weeks back. I’ve spent a few weeks refining my vision, getting some details lined & I’m anxious to get back so I can compare what I wrote with what your guided us through
No problem, glad it worked for you!
most days i can’t decide if i’m a writer or a photographer. can’t wait to explore this maniFUNSto.
crap, my filter kicked in late and i just made a pun out loud. i better stick to photography. thanks, kristen!
lol, I love the maniFUNsto!
Love the manifesto idea! working on mine as we speak. and you are totally my people and I’m your people, too. Thanks for sharing the awesome-ness that is you!
Why thanks, and ditto!
Starting this now!!!
Woot woot, have fun!
I was watching a Ted talk today and it made me think of this series of posts you wrote!
http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html
The fact that ANYTHING I said made you think of Simon Sinek is a great honor. He’s one of my heroes. Thank you!
I truly love that you throw F-Bombs and S-poops around like you just don’t care and yet you are extremely professional about it. I had begun writing my manifesto but I believe I got sidetracked with cleaning cat vomit. Must finish the manifesto soon, I believe. Thank you!
LOL…if you can be professional about that sort of thing…all the F-bombs and S-poops are to keep you from fainting if you meet me in real life.
Hope your manifesto turns out lovely and vomit-free.
